When was the last time you read a business success story that went something like this: “I had a passion and I just sat with that passion for five years until I suddenly was a success?”

Yeah, me either.

So many of us start our business with great intentions. You have a passion or idea and you want to change the world. But straight out the gate, you are met with challenges and hurdles you aren’t sure how to overcome. And before you know it you’re spending your day sending pointless emails and rearranging your fridge.

I’ve been in this position and it’s tough. I stopped loving my life and business because I didn’t know what I was supposed to be doing each day to reach my goals. I felt lost and a little silly because everyone else seemed to know what they were doing except me.

What I didn’t know at the time was there isn’t a clear roadmap for how to take your passion and turn it into a successful business, no matter how hard we wish for one. Thankfully, when I felt like giving up I went back to the one thing that makes me feel in control: I made an action plan.

I sat down and listed everything I wanted to achieve. Then I worked backwards, listing all the small actions I needed to take every day to build up my business from sending emails to reading books to hiring a website developer. Finally, I plotted out each activity on my calendar and gave myself three months to complete everything.

Every day over the next three months I sat down at my desk and finally I was filled with purpose. I started to love my business again. And the best part? I started to see results. Work started to come in. I was asked to write for my favourite publications, and I was able to speak and teach at industry events.

All of this happened because I turned my passion into action.

I made an action plan and stuck to it.

Here’s how I did it:

• I built my ideal work day
• I learnt how to juggle my work commitments and still have a life
• I started marketing my blog like a human
• I built my authority as a writer
• I took time to understand my ideal clients
• I created sales funnels
• I made my website about my client (not me)
• I put myself out there and started meeting people
• I focused on staying productive in between client work
• I made time to learn new skills
• I implemented content marketing best practices
