Episode 77: Coach Hopping (And why it’s keeping you stuck)

Welcome to The Rachel Kurzyp Show.

Today I want to address a growing trend in the online space: coach hopping.

I don’t know if I made this term up but we’re going with it because I feel it sums up when I’m seeing.

Coach hopping is a term I’m using to describe the act of working with a coach for a few months and then working with another coach for a few months before moving onto another.

And being in a continuous cycle of going through different coaching programs because you believe that this next program or coach will be the one to get you more cash, clients and opportunities.

This concept and what I’m sharing here today can also be applied to the online course industry and explains why course completion rates are so low.

And let me premise this by saying that there is nothing wrong with working with multiple specialised coaches. Some of my clients do this and I’m all for working with experts in your space that can support you in different areas of your business and life.

Sometimes a coach relationship naturally comes to an end or business and life circumstances changes so it doesn’t align anymore. I’m not talking about these circumstances today.

What I want to speak to specifically is why I believe coach hopping is happening.

It’s so easy to fall into the cycle of learning new information, getting excited about the possibilities and then not taking action. Feeling guilty or disappointed that you haven’t achieved the results you want so you start looking for the new way, approach or program you can join that promises to get you results.

I believe all my client’s success is inevitable and that they already have everything they need to succeed in whatever way this looks for them. My role is to hold a brave space for them to learn, test and grow knowing that this is the environment in which most of us need to feel safe in order to take courageous action.

My role isn’t to have all the answers or to convince my clients to do the work. Yes, I provide accountability and motivation and encouragement, but I can’t make my clients believe in themselves, they have to do this inner work on their own.

And I believe that one of the main contributing factors is the lack of self belief and self trust that is keeping people in a coach hopping cycle.
I know not every coach or program is created equal (I think we’ve all signed up for an experience that was sub-par) but the the majority of qualified and experienced coaches are providing spaces that enable their clients to succeed.

When I think of my coaching clients, everyone one of them as achieved what they set out to within the timeframe be it 3, 6 or 12 months working together. I know self belief and self trust is a huge contributing factor because they tell me so.

Hopping from one program to another doesn’t support the building of self trust and belief either. Each time you enrol into another coaching program you need to adapt to a new system, learn a new process or framework and re-share who you are, what you do, who you help so the coach understands you and your business. These things take time and may mean you’re not able to implement what you’ve learned within the program before it ends.

I don’t know about you, but I get clarity and from doing, confidence through practise and self trust through continually committing to my goals and seeing my plan through.

This personal growth takes time. And this is why I hear phrases from my community and potential clients like: “I tried everything, nothing works.” When I’ve ask them what they’ve tried they normally tell me about the 2-3 coaching programs they’ve done within the past 6-12 months. Yet, nothing has stuck. I can now identity why.

So if you’re feeling called in by this episode know you won’t be the only one. Nearly every business owner I know has fallen into this cycle with courses or coaching or both.

So where do you go from here?

You need to be honest with yourself and address the blocks that keep coming up that are stopping you from taking action and will continue to do so no matter the course or program until you address them.

Choose a coach and coaching program that is going to support your continuous personal growth. There are so many benefits to working with the same coach over a long period of time. I’ve been working with my coach for nearly two years now.

She knows my triggers, understands my values, has supported me through the creation of 2 different business models and is wholeheartedly behind my business vision. We are able to achieve so much on a daily basis because this.

Now I have had this type of support in my business, I can really see the value of building a cheer squad and team for the long term. My clients tell me they feel the same way about our coaching relationship too.
